The Role of Siblings in the Autism Journey

For a child with needs having a brother or sister is really a blessing. Since they grow up together from birth siblings often understand the childs behaviors and needs in a way that others do not.

Understanding the Dynamics and Benefits

The relationship between siblings is very rewarding. It can be tough at first and has many long-term benefits:

  • Initial Challenges: At first a sibling may feel frustrated or annoyed especially if they experience aggressive behaviors like being hit by their autistic brother or sister.
  • Growing Empathy: Over time the sibling learns that these behaviors are not mean. Rather a way for their brother or sister to communicate their needs.

The sibling often becomes the childs friend and protector. When they attend the school they can keep an eye on their sibling throughout the day to ensure they are safe.

This relationship helps the sibling grow. Develop important life skills, like maturity, empathy and emotional strength at a young age. They learn to be patient and understanding.

The Danger of Parental Neglect

A problem in families with a child with special needs is not giving equal attention to all children.

A Note for Parents: Since a child with needs requires a lot of care parents often forget about the needs of their other children. It is essential to remember that these siblings also need support, care and time from their parents to grow into healthy individuals.

The sibling relationship plays a role in helping a child with special needs. When a child with needs gets professional help and the support of a loving sibling they have a better chance to overcome their challenges, do well and reach their full potential. The siblings support is very important, for the childs growth and development.
